Bokurano is by far the most depressing mecha I know of. Its a show about a group of kids. (the most dysfunctional kids in the world it seems) Who happen upon a cave while at a kind of summer camp. Inside the cave they meet a weird man who asks if they want to play a game. But in order to agree they have to sign a contract. They all agree except one little girl. The little girls older brother who is some kind of nasty bully to her (we find out why in a later episode.) says he doesn't want her to play. After signing they are suddenly taken to a room with a chair in it. The man then proceeds to sit in the chair and fight a giant monster.
After the fight the man disappears and the kids find themselves at the beach. Wondering if what just happened was a dream. Until suddenly another giant monster appears and they have to fight it. Once inside they meet "dung beetle." Probably the creepiest thing I have ever seen in any anime and with an attitude that suits it looks perfectly. He is sadistic and mean almost cruel in fact and he is their guide through this all and he explains that its a kind of lottery each of the kids have a chair that has some meaning to them they will spin around and whomever chair is chosen will hear their name spoken. Which means that they are the pilot that round. They pilot it while sitting in the chair using their mind. However once the first fight is over and they won they die. Of course Mr. Beetle does not tell them this right away and the first boy to pilot appears to be pushed off the side of the robot. Everyone thinks another of the kids pushed him off. But later the truth is revealed. And lets just say that things spiral down from there.
This is definitely not a show for kids. It has very mature theme and is more of a drama than action mecha. There is a lot of conflict and strife that the kids must deal with and inner demons are the subject of the day in most episodes. If chilling drama is you cup of tea then this will satisfy you for sure.
